FAQ
Where is the Laos Toohey Fitness Centre located?
The Laos Toohey Fitness Centre is located in Dandenong just off Cheltenham Road. For directions please see our Contact/Location page.
What classes do you run?
We run Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) and Taekwondo classes.
How much does it cost?
The cost depends on what classes you are undertaking. Many of our students combine different classes so the costs vary. Taekwondo classes operate under memberships as we are a part of the Melbourne Taekwondo Centre. Please contact us and we’ll be able to assist you with determining the cost of your classes.
What time do classes start?
It depends on what classes you want to start attending. We have a timetable available here to download in PDF format. Some class times are subject to change on occasion. If you attend regular classes you will be informed if there are any changes to class times. Otherwise please contact us to enquire and confirm class times.
I’m a beginner, what should I wear to class?
This will depend on which class you are attending. For our Taekwondo classes we offer a FREE 1 month trial for new students. If you are attending this class we suggest you wear tracksuit pants and tshirt so that you are able to move freely. After your trial you can then purchase a Taekwondo Dobok and belt.
For our Muay Thai/Kickboxing classes you can wear shorts and a tshirt or singlet top that you can move easily in. Women can also wear leggings to our (Muay Thai/Kickboxing) classes as well. Wearing tracksuit pants may make you feel too hot during these classes.
What should I bring to class?
Make sure you also bring a drink (sports drink) to class, as you lose fluid during exercise and it is important to keep hydrated.
Can I buy any equipment or uniforms through the Centre?
Yes. You can buy most items through our centre. We sell, MTC Taekwondo Doboks, (belts are including with each grading fee), Taekwondo shoes, as well Laos Toohey Fitness Centre hoodies, vests, singlets, warm up jackets, muscle tops, tshirts, caps and beanies. We also sell sparring equipment for Taekwondo such as shin guards, body shields, arm guards, and hear gear. For Muay Thai/Kickboxing we sell shin guards. If you wish to purchase equipment such as kick shields we can order those in for you.
Are the classes hard?
Classes can be physically challenging; however if you do not usually exercise or have not exercised for some time, we do suggest you begin slowly and do classes at pace you are comfortable with. This is so you do not cause yourself unnecessary and avoidable injury. As your fitness improves and you begin to learn the various techniques, you will then be able to assert yourself.
Is there a recommended age limit?
For Taekwondo we recommend a minimum of 5 years, since young children are still developing their skills and their attention span may not be enough to sustain them through a class. There is no age limit for any our classes and we encourage student of all ages to join.
Do I have to fight in any of the classes?
No. In Taekwondo, you will undertake some sparring, but this is non-contact shadow sparring. We do have a sparring class for those students interested in pursuing sparring, but it is not compulsory. The same applies to our Muay Thai/Kickboxing classes. There are some exercises which may involve contact but this is usually limited and students will wear protective shin guards.
Do you give private lessons?
Yes, Toohey does offer private coaching and lessons for Muay Thai and Kickboxing. If you are interested in private training, please contact Toohey.
What are the benefits of doing martial arts as opposed to just exercising?
While Martial Arts are seen as a fighting art, they are not primarily just for fighting. A large component of practising any martial art is discipline. Through martial arts you can not only improve your fitness, but also develop skills that are applicable to everyday life such as building self-confidence.
Our centre is built on encouraging and teaching our students to be the best they can be through their training. You will be surprised at what you can achieve through applying yourself.
